Series XI Begins in Record Setting Style
AbbottWMM Series XI began with record-setting runs performances today at the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon.
Mary Keitany (KEN), AbbottWMM Series IX champion, produced one of the greatest ever women's marathon performances to break Paula Radcliffe's women's only world record, crossing the line at 2:17:01 and earning a third London title.
In the wheelchair race, Manuela Schãr (SUI) broke the wheelchair course record to clinch her first ever London title, and David Weir (GBR) became the most successful athlete in the event's 37-year history with his seventh win.
In the men's race, Kenya's Daniel Wanjiru won in 2:05:49, holding off Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele.
All four athletes now are on top of the AbbottWMM Series XI leaderboards. Today's London race begins the one-year cycle of competition for the world's best athletes aiming for an AbbottWMM title. In addition to today's London race, Series XI includes the IAAF/IPC World Championships and the BMW Berlin, Bank of America Chicago, TCS New York City, Tokyo and Boston Marathons. Series XI will conclude at the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon.
As part of the new AbbottWMM charity program, a total of $40,000 will be donated to charities in honor of today's four 2017 London Marathon champions. More information on selected charities will be released soon.
