Course

1) Marathon:
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building -- Iidabashi -- Kanda -- Nihombashi -- Asakusa Kaminari-Mon -- Ryogoku -- Monzen-nakacho -- Ginza -- Takanawa -- Hibiya --Tokyo Station/Gyoko-dori Ave. (This course is certified by the JAAF and AIMS/IAAF .)
2) 10km Race:
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building -- Iidabashi -- Kanda -- Nihombashi (Results are considered unofficial. Finishing place is determined by net time.)

Competition Rules

The races will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the IAAF, the JAAF and the Race Organizer. IAAF Road Race Label Regulations also apply to the Tokyo Marathon 2018, which has been certified by the IAAF as a Gold Label road race. Doping control is conducted under IAAF Anti-Doping Regulations and/or Japan Anti-Doping Regulations.
World Para Athletics Rules and Regulations and the competition rules of the Tokyo Marathon apply to the wheelchair marathon. Doping control is conducted under World Para Athletics Anti-Doping Regulations and/or Japan Anti-Doping Regulations.

Time Limits

Marathon: 7 hours
Wheelchair Marathon: 2 hours and 10 minutes
10km Race: 1 hour and 40 minutes
Wheelchair 10km race: 35minutes

  • (i) The time limits are based on the gun time (not on the net time).
  • (ii) The cut-off time will be enforced at each checkpoint due to limited duration of traffic control, security operation and event operation. The runners, who fail to pass through the checkpoint before the cut-off time, will be disqualified from the race. Furthermore, trailing runners who lag excessively behind the cut-off time pace may be asked to leave the course at anytime.

Maximum number of Participants / Eligibility

Those who fulfill the following conditions, and whose participation is approved by the organizer.

  1. 1) Marathon: Over 19 years old on the day of the event (Field size: 37,500 runners)
    1. 1-1) General participants
      Persons who can complete the course within six hours and 40 minutes
      *Persons with disabilities who find it difficult to run without support should run with a partner (running with a guide dog is not allowed)
    2. 1-2) Semi-Elite (Field size: 1,500 runners)
      Athletes who are nominated by the races that are affiliated in the RUN as ONE - Tokyo Marathon 2019.
    3. 1-3) Elite (Applications will commence in December.) (Field size: 100 runners)
      • - Athletes, registered with the JAAF in fiscal 2018 who satisfy the special requirements set forth by the JAAF
      • - Invited Athletes: Domestic and international runners nominated by the JAAF
    4. 1-4) Wheelchair (General participants) (Field size: 10 runners)
      • -Athletes capable of completing the race within 2 hours and 10 minutes using the racing wheelchair.
      • -The person who has proof of disabilities.
    5. 1-5) Wheelchair Elite (Applications will commence in December.) (Field size: 30 runners)
      • -Athletes who have the following record in the tournament of the World Para Athletics certified races while registered with the JPA in 2018, and anticipated registration with IPC in 2019 who have T53 or T54 class of World Para Athletics Classification:
        1 hour and 50 minutes or under (Male)
        2 hours or under (Female)
      • -Invited Athletes:National and international athletes nominated by the JPA.
  1. 2) 10 km (Field size: 500 runners)
    1. 2-1) Junior & Youth (Field size: 290 runners)
      Runners between 16 and 18 years of age on the race day, who are capable of finishing the race in 1.5 hours (Runners born between March 4, 2000 and March 3, 2003 are eligible)
      • *Including those runners who are selected separately by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government under the projects related to the Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery support.
    2. 2-2) Visually-impaired: Persons aged at least 16 on the day of the event(running with a guide dog is not allowed) (Field size: 50 runners)
      Persons who can complete the course within 1 hour and 30 minutes
      The person who has proof of disabilities.
      *Persons with disabilities who find it difficult to run without support is allowed to run with a partner
    3. 2-3) Intellectually-impaired (Persons aged at least 16 on the day of the event) (Field size: 100 runners)
      Persons who can complete the race within 1 hour and 30 minutes
      The person who has proof of disabilities.
      *Persons with disabilities who find it difficult to run without support is allowed to run with a partner
    4. 2-4) Transplant Recipients (Persons aged at least 16 on the day of the event) (Field size: 50 runners)
      Persons who can complete the race within 1 hour and 30 minutes
      The person who has proof of disabilities or medical certificate, etc. to prove to be transplant recipients. *Limited to those who have received an organ transplant or bone marrow transplant.
    5. 2-5) Wheelchair users (Persons aged at least 16 on the day of the event )
      Persons who can complete the race within 35 minutes using a racing wheelchair
      The person who has proof of disabilities.
      ※Racing wheelchair requirements are specified in the latest "Rules and Regulations" set by the World Para Athletics.

  1. 1. Marathon: Japan residents - 10,800 Yen (from overseas- 12,800 Yen)
  2. 2. 10km Race: Japan residents - 5,600 Yen (from overseas- 6,700 Yen)

Application Procedure

  1. 1) How to Apply:
    Apply through our website either by a computer or a smartphone:

    10:00 a.m. JST on August 1 (Wednesday) to 5:00 p.m. JST on August 31 (Friday) 2018
  3. 3) Selection of applicants:
    When the maximum number of entries has exceeded, participants will be chosen by lottery. The Results of lottery is Scheduled by mid-September.
  4. 4) Payment:
    Selected entrants must pay the entry fee by credit card before the deadline. If the payment is not received by the due date, the application will be void.
    *Applications to Charity Runners will be accepted from Monday, July 2 to Tuesday, July 31, on a first-come, first-served basis (up to 4,700 charity runners). Applications to Active Charity Runners will be accepted until Friday, 31 August (up to 300 runners).
    *Priority applications from the premium members of ONE TOKYO, the official club of Tokyo Marathon Foundation, will be accepted from Monday, July 2 to Tuesday, July 31 (3,000 runners)
    Entrants will be selected by the lottery if applications exceed the maximum number.
    *For the details on the RUN as ONE - Tokyo Marathon 2019, please refer to the Tokyo Marathon official website.
    *Applications to elite runners and elite wheelchair athletes will be accepted from December.

Award Presentations

  1. 1) 10km
    Junior & Youth, Wheelchair, Visually-impaired runners, Intellectually-impaired runners, Transplant recipients:
    First three men and first three women
    *Placings will be determined by the net time, time from when each participant crosses the start line.
    *The award for the first three finishers will be based on net time.
    *Participant starting from a block that is not assigned will not be subject to receive award.
  2. 2) Marathon
    1. 2-1) Overall: Top three male and female finishers
    2. 2-2) RUN as ONE-Tokyo Marathon 2019 "Wild Card Award": Top three men and female finishers in the semi-elite division
    3. 2-3) Wheelchair race: Top three male and female finishers
    4. 2-4) Next Generation Athlete Award 2019: Top male and female runner belonging to The Inter-University Athletics Union of Japan.
      *In the above categories, placings will be determined by gun time measured from the sound of the starting gun.

Prize Money

For both marathon and wheelchair marathon races, the prize purse based on the results will be awarded in accordance with separate rules.

Packet Pick-Up

  1. 1) Date:
    Over the three days of Thursday, February 28, Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, 2019
  2. 2) Venue:
    Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2019 at Odaiba-Aomi Event Area (N,O,P)
    * Packet pick-up for wheelchair users will be different; we will provide further information separately.
    * There will be no registration or packet pick-up on the race day (March 3 (Sunday)).
    * There will be no other registration or packet pick-up dates.

Other Informations

  1. 1) Members of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations will have their membership confirmed, so be sure to register with the Association prior to applying for the event and to include the correct registration information with your application. The start block will not be guaranteed to start immediately following the elite runners. Irrespective to the start block, please note that this is a competitive race and it will be run in accordance with the regulations of the JAAF.
  2. 2) Please make every effort to enter the race in the best possible health by training sufficiently prior to the event and consulting with healthcare professional.
  3. 3) The organizer will transport the participants belonging to the finish upon request. Depending on traffic conditions and other reasons, the participants may require to wait to receive their belongings.
  4. 4) In case of opening of spots, secondary lottery may be held for ONE TOKYO premium members.
  5. 5) The organizer can authorize third parties to sell photographs and souvenirs.
  6. 6) In addition to these instructions above, the participants must follow all directions by the event organizer.

Event Regulations

The regulations with which the Tokyo Marathon applicants and participating runners must comply are established in the Event Regulations.

  • 1. The event will comply with all domestic laws and regulations.
  • 2. In addition to the Event Regulations, the event will adhere to the Race Rules, the Race Regulations, and the Entry Regulations.
  • 3. The event organizer will not be liable to any detriments caused by the followings:
    • (1) Illness or other accidents (excluding emergency treatment)
    • (2) Loss and/or damage of personal property
    • (3) Late arrival to the race due to trouble with public transportation and/or poor road condition
  • 4. To ensure the safety of the event, the event organizer shall impose the appropriate regulations over the race area.
  • 5. Runners are requested to follow the instruction by the event organizer. Otherwise, he/she will be disqualified from the participation in the race.
  • 6. Copyright of images, photographs, articles, race records, and location information, covering the event, and their usage right for TV broadcasting, newspapers, magazines and the Internet, belongs to the event organizer. Aforementioned copyright includes but not limited to names and other personal information such as age and address (country, prefecture and city only) of entrants mentioned in the article covering the event.
  • 7. The event organizer, in recognition of the importance of protecting personal data, abides by all laws and ordinances concerning the protection of personal data and adheres to the event organizer's privacy policy when handling personal data.
  • 8. The event orgnizer will provide adequate first aid to injury and illness during the race event. In certain cases, the event organizer will provide medical expenses following the event.
  • 9. The event organizer will provide professional medical attention to any injury, illness or accidents and in necessary cases will transfer the patient to the nearest hospital. Medical examination will be done by medical personnel and the information will be shared to the event organizer.

Race Regulations

The event organizer does not permit any participant to run in the race who is in violation of the event rules, other laws and regulations, or public order and morals, as well as the prohibitions specified in the following examples 1 to 11.
If any of these is applicable to a participant, the event organizer may not allow the participant to join the race or may keep the participant from continuing to run even after the race has already started. Any objection against its judgment will not be accepted.

  • 1. Dressed in clothing or wearing gear that may be dangerous, hurtful or cause other runners to fall. Running with the whole part of the face covered.
  • 2. Dressed inappropriately for a sports event or in clothing that is unpleasant to other runners or spectators.
  • 3. Clothing for the purpose of political or religious assertions or propaganda, as well as advertising.
  • 4. Clothing for the purpose of promoting or advertising an individual name, a specified region or an organization that the event organizer does not acknowledge.
  • 5. Use of articles that could cause other runners to mistakenly recognize as a starting signal and cause confusion to the race management, or use of devices with a strong sound volume that could disturb other runners.
  • 6. Acts that cause a delay to the race such as dancing, performing, playing instruments, standing near the starting or finish lines, or in the streets along the course.
  • 7. Soliciting monetary contributions, signatures, etc.
  • 8. Preventing pedestrians from crossing the course or obstructing the passage of emergency vehicles at certain points, when and where they are allowed to do so.
  • 9. Obstructing the race by failing to follow the instructions of the race officials.
  • 10. Changing clothes in undesignated locations and/or unrinating or defecating at places other than toilet facilities.
  • 11. Occurrence of issues other than those provided in numbers 1 to 10 that the event organizer judges inappropriate to the race.

Entry Regulations

Applicants who cannot observe the Event Regulations, the Race Regulations, or the following will be rejected in the entrant selection (or disqualified when it is found after the entry fee payment / race participation), and no refund will be made. Moreover, applicants will never be allowed to participate in our future races.

  • (1) A duplicate application for the race entry by the same applicant is prohibited.
  • (2) False name, date of birth, gender, nationality, residence, or record is strictly prohibited. Modification of entry information in the application form or cancellation of entry after submission will not be allowed; please carefully check your entry data before submission. Especially in the misinformation of nationality or event category, even if it is a mistake without intention of falsifying, it may result in disqualification of the entry. If the event organizer identifies problems with entry data, the Entry Desk will contact the runner either by e-mail or telephone.
  • (3) Certain PCs, browsers and operating systems may cause errors in your application process through the Internet. The event organizer will not be responsible for delays in applications caused by defects of the Internet connectivity etc.
  • (4) The lottery and selection results will be notified to all applicants via e-mail to the address registered on the application form. Changes to the e-mail address registered on the application form will not be allowed. Applicants who change their e-mail address after the completion of entry application will not be able to receive notifications such as announcements regarding the lottery and selection results, as well as the event information.
  • (5) The event organizer will not verify correct delivery of e-mail. The event organizer will not be liable to any detriments caused by undelivered e-mails such as the lottery result notification, due to PC malfunctions, e-mail refusal setting, wrong e-mail address, security software settings and so forth.
  • (6) The Entry Desk are unable to answer questions regarding the status of an entry, result of a lottery and etc. by phone.
  • (7) Applicants who fail to pay their entry fee by the designated date will have their entries cancelled automatically, and will not be allowed to participate in the race. Placing the right of entry or the Number Card up for auction is strictly prohibited. Any participant guilty of breaching this rule will be disqualified, and the entry fee will not be refunded.
  • (8) Participation by an individual other than the applicant (proxy entrant, transferred rights) is not permitted. As part of security measures, please wear your wristbands if you are requested to do so by the event organizer, in addition to any other instructions that are issued.
  • (9) Entry fee are non-refundable if the race is cancelled due to natural disaster such as earthquake, storm, flood, snow, accidents, epidemic, or other incidents beyond the control of the event organizer. No refund will be made as well for overpayment and/or duplicate payments.
  • (10) Participants must complete registration by picking up a packet (including your bib number) during the three days before the race day by presenting a valid photo I.D. in person. Failing to perform packet pick-up will result in disqualification from participation in the race. Proxy registration is not accepted. Participants cannot register or receive the packet on the race day.
